You didn't do anything wrong. This warning just means Claap can't reach your camera or microphone, and needs a little nudge to get access back. The fix takes about a minute, but first let's figure out which situation you're in.

Quick Answer

Open the Claap Chrome extension and click Grant Access next to camera and microphone. That's it for most people. If the warning keeps showing up, read on.

Environment

  • Affects users of the Claap Chrome extension on Google Chrome or Brave browser

  • The Mac-specific re-authorization fix (Scenario 2) applies to macOS only

  • IT-managed devices may have permissions reset by company security policy. Check with your IT department if fixes don't persist

Step-by-Step Fix

This warning has two distinct causes. Identify your scenario, then follow the matching steps.

You accidentally clicked "Deny" at some point

This is the most common cause. Chrome remembered that denial and has been blocking Claap ever since even if it was a misclick weeks ago.

Fix it directly from the extension : click the Claap icon in your toolbar, then hit Grant Access next to both camera and microphone.

Or fix it from the Chrome bar

Look for the permission icon in your address bar, click it, and select Always allow for camera and microphone. If the icon isn't showing up, head to Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings, find Claap, and toggle camera and microphone back on manually.

Permission button in the Chrome bar

If the permission icon is not visible in the Chrome bar:

  1. Open Chrome and go to Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings.

  2. Find and click Claap for Chrome in the site list.

  3. Toggle on camera and microphone permissions.

Using Brave? When the permission popup appears, make sure you select "Forever" not "once" or "this session." Otherwise the permission resets every time and you'll be back here again.

You did not deny permissions, Claap is incorrectly assuming you did

This one's a macOS quirk. After a system update or a security policy change, macOS can silently revoke Chrome's screen recording permission without telling anyone. Claap sees the missing permission and assumes you blocked it.

The fix is to remove Chrome from your screen recording permissions and add it back, which forces macOS to re-issue the authorization properly.

Re-authorize Google Chrome for screen recording (macOS)

  1. Open Mac System Settings > Security & Privacy.

  2. Scroll down to Screen Recording.

  3. Uncheck Google Chrome.

  4. Quit and restart Google Chrome.

  5. Return to Mac System Settings > Security & Privacy > Screen Recording.

  6. Check Google Chrome again.

How to know it's fixed ?

The warning is gone when you open the extension, the camera and mic feeds show up without errors, and you can start a recording without hitting any permission blocks.

A Few Edge Cases Worth Knowing

  • IT-managed devices: If your organization's security policy automatically resets browser permissions, individual permission fixes will not persist. Contact your IT department to whitelist Claap's camera, microphone, and screen recording permissions at the policy level.

  • External camera not detected: If you are using an external camera, confirm the external camera is physically connected to your computer and powered on before opening the Claap Chrome extension.

  • Laptop lid closed with external monitor: If you are using a second monitor with your laptop lid closed, open the laptop lid. Claap cannot access the webcam on some laptop models when the lid is closed.
